O'Neil entered the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005 while she was in high school. She was able to advance to the top 100 round because the judges were thrilled by her vocal performance. O'Neil's performance was highly praised by the judges. However, O'Neil suffered a significant loss during the Top 10 as well as the Top 9 final weeks when she was voted for in the bottom 3, top 3, and the bottom 2. It was a shock to the judges and they recommended that the public decide for Melissa O'Neil, who was the contestant with the most impressive singing abilities. O'Neil's performances were such awe-inspiring that she didn't even make it to the third place in the future. O'Neil and her fellow contestants Rex Goudie and Werner delivered two spectacular performances in September of 2005. Werner reportedly said that reports would claim that O'Neil was able to defeat Goudie and became the 3rd Canadian Idol. She was the first female, and youngest winner in the Idol history. O'Neil's Canadian Idol triumph was announced by Premier Paul Martin immediately.
