O'Neil auditioned for the third season of Canadian Idol at the beginning of 2005 when she was a high school student. The contestant was able to climb into the top 100 because of the enthusiasm shown by judges for her performances. O'Neil won high praises from the judges. She was however a complete loser in both the Top 10 Week as well as the Top 9 Week of the Finals. The judges were stunned by the results and advised the viewers to select contestants such as Melissa with the strongest singing skills. O'Neil has been always delivering top performance since then, never finished lower than the three top performers. The two other performances she gave on September 7,2005, where O'Neil made it to the top two spots in the competition's contest, Werner said that in the morning, papers would cover O'Neil's win over Rex Goudie and become her third Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil's Canadian Idol triumph was made public by Premier Paul Martin immediately.
